The PADI Deep Diver Course enables you to explore deeper dive sites with confidence at depths down to 40 metres/130 ft. During this course you learn to manage your gas supply, go over buddy contact procedures and buoyancy control.
PADI Deep Diver Course - Overview
Scuba dive with confidence at depths down to 40 metres.
The lure of the deep. There’s something exciting and mysterious about exploring deeper dive sites while scuba diving. For instance, a wreck that attracts you below 18 metres/60 feet, and on wall dives it may be a giant fan or sponge. Whatever it is, to scuba dive with confidence and safety at depths down to 40 metres/130 feet you should take the PADI Deep Diver Specialty course.

If you’ve earned the PADI Adventure Diver rating or higher, and you’re at least 15 years old, you can enrol in the Deep Diver course.
To complete the academic studies, we estimate 4 – 6 hours of independent study.
To complete the water based portions of this course will take two days. A full day is 8 hours on average.
You’ll use a dive computer along with the rest of the standard scuba equipment. A dive light and slate are also used. All required equipment for your course is supplied by ABC Diving.
The total, fully inclusive cost of the PADI Deep Diver Course starts at €325.00 with our ‘Standard’ option. Our ‘Bespoke’ option is €780.00.
This includes:
– All dive equipment needed for the completion of your course
– PADI educational materials
– Certification cost
THE PADI Deep Diver Course LEARNING PATH
- Execute a descent using a reference as a tactile or visual guide (line, wall or sloping bottom).
Compare changes in colour at the surface and at depth.
Compare your own depth gauge to your instructor’s and/or other student divers’ depth gauges.
Use a depth gauge and timing device (or a dive computer with an ascent- rate indicator) to measure an ascent rate not to exceed 18 metres/60 feet per minute.
Perform a 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres/15 feet before surfacing.
- Execute a “free” descent using a reference line, wall or sloping bottom as a visual guide only.
Describe and record the changes that occur to three pressure-sensitive items while at depth.
Perform a navigation swim with a compass away from, and back to, the anchor of the reference line (one diver navigates away from, the other navigates back to, the reference line for a distance of between 10 and 20 kick cycles, depending on visibility).
Ascend using a reference line, wall or sloping bottom as a visual guide only.
Use depth gauge and timing device (or a dive computer with ascent-rate indicator) to measure an ascent rate not to exceed 18 metres/60 feet per minute.
Complete a 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres/15 feet before surfacing, without physically holding on to a reference line for positioning.
- Execute a descent using a reference as a tactile or visual guide (line, wall or sloping bottom).
- Compare the amount of time needed to complete a task on the surface and at depth.
- Ascend using a reference as a tactile or visual guide (line, wall or sloping bottom).
- Use a depth gauge and timing device (or a dive computer with ascent- rate indicator) to measure an ascent rate not to exceed 18 metres/60 feet per minute.
Perform an 8-minute simulated emergency decompression stop at 5 metres/15 feet before surfacing, while breathing from an emergency air source for at least one minute of the total time.
- Execute a descent using a reference as a tactile or visual guide (line, wall or sloping bottom).
Complete an underwater exploration of the area.
Ascend using a reference as a tactile or visual guide (line, wall or sloping bottom).
Use your depth gauge and timing device (or a dive computer with ascent- rate indicator) to measure an ascent rate not to exceed 18 metres/60 feet per minute.
Perform a 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres/15 feet before surfacing.
- Descent – A detailed look into your body position during the first stages of descent.
- Buddies execute a five-point descent. You should be able to descend comfortably without kicking – just by exhaling. Concentrate on descending slowly and neutralising your buoyancy as needed during descent.
- Bubble check and acclimatisation below the surface (3-6 metres/10-20 feet recommended).
- Adjust for neutral buoyancy at depth determined by instructor.
- Demonstrate efficient fin kicks, using long, slow strokes and gliding after each kick.
- An introduction to the frog kick and reverse frog kick.
- Manoeuvre close to a non-living portion of the bottom (rock, sand, etc.) without touching it and then back away using neutral buoyancy with hand or fin sculling.
Unlike shallower dives, deep dives tend to be short since time and air supply is limited. Consequently, you don’t have a great deal of time to do much, so you’ll need to make smart decisions about a dive objective and dive accomplishments.
Therefore, the philosophy of this course is to focus on making smart decisions for a stress free, deep diving experience with an emphasis on safety. This means to expand your knowledge about deep dive planning and organisation, the basics of deep diving, hazards to avoid, deep diving support equipment, and how to interact responsibly with the aquatic life you’ll see while deep diving.
